Does Twilio support iMessage?

No. Twilio has no official P2P iMessage API. Comms is an SMS + iMessage line with an inbox and an optional agent — for a product that already texts customers and is shopping a line.

The short answer

If you searched “does Twilio do iMessage,” the honest first sentence is no. Twilio’s public Programmable Messaging stack is carrier SMS, MMS, and RCS. There is no documented Twilio API that places a blue-bubble peer-to-peer iMessage from a regular phone number.

That is not a missing checkbox on a roadmap slide. iMessage is Apple’s network. SMS is the carriers’. A CPaaS that speaks SMS cannot silently become iMessage because you pass an iPhone number.

Apple Messages for Business is not blue iMessage

On 7 May 2026 Twilio published a changelog entry: Apple Messages for Business private beta. Their product page asks you to request access or talk to sales. AMB is a real channel — verified sender, Maps / Safari / Siri entry points, list and time pickers, Apple Pay. It is still Messages for Business.

Messages for Business is a grey-bubble branded business thread. It is not a blue P2P iMessage from an E.164 your customers already have saved as a person. If your product already texts from a number, AMB is a different motion: Apple approval, a business sender, a Twilio beta. Do not let the word “Messages” collapse those two products.

When Twilio wins — stay

Blooio already owns a lot of this query. We are late, and we are not going to pretend Twilio is useless so a blue-bubble page can rank. Twilio wins when the job is reach, registration, and a stack you already operate: OTPs, receipts, Android, mixed-device lists, Studio / Flex / Conversations you have paid to learn.

If green SMS is converting and compliance is already done, do not rip the pipe out for bubble color. Keep Twilio. Add a line only when the thread itself is the product — support, cart, booking — and the customer is shopping a number, not an SMS vendor.

Get a dedicated line

When you need a real blue line

Shop a line when the customer already texts you (or you already text them) and you want that conversation on an owned SMS + iMessage number, in an inbox your team can sit in, with an optional agent on the same thread. That is Comms Dedicated: $200/month, $0 setup, your E.164, you pick the area code, 5,000–7,000 messages a day.

Plus at $50 is a shared platform line — a trial. Free is shared, 100 messages/day. Neither is the number you hold up against Twilio, Sendblue, Linq, Photon, or anyone selling a dedicated line. Do not run a merchant-facing number on shared.

What this page will not claim

We will not claim HIPAA. We will not promise typing indicators or read receipts as guaranteed features. We will not tell you to “launch an iMessage agent in plain English” or walk 10DLC registration. The identity is narrower: SMS + iMessage line, inbox, optional agent — for people who already have the agent/SMS motion and are shopping a line.

FAQ

Does Twilio support iMessage?

No. Twilio has no official peer-to-peer iMessage API. Messages you send through Twilio Programmable Messaging to an iPhone arrive as green-bubble SMS or MMS, not as a blue iMessage from a regular number.

Is Twilio’s Apple Messages for Business the same as iMessage?

No. Twilio announced Apple Messages for Business (AMB) in private beta on 7 May 2026. AMB is Apple’s verified Messages for Business channel — a branded, grey-bubble business thread — not a blue P2P iMessage line on an E.164 you own.

When should I stay on Twilio?

Stay if SMS, MMS, and RCS already do the job: one-time codes, shipping alerts, Android reach, or high-volume A2P where bubble color is not the product. Twilio is excellent at that work. Do not buy a blue line to decorate a stack that is already winning on SMS.

What does a real iMessage line cost on Comms?

Comms Dedicated is $200/month with $0 setup: your own E.164, you choose the area code, 5,000–7,000 messages a day, plus the inbox and an optional agent. Plus at $50 is a shared platform trial. Free is a shared line at 100 messages/day. Those are not the SKU to compare to a dedicated competitor.

Does Comms guarantee typing indicators or read receipts?

No. Treat delivery as a blue iMessage when the recipient is on iMessage, with SMS available as the other channel on the same line. Typing indicators and read receipts are not guaranteed product claims on this page.
